Will Lowe with wife Lucy
'Anty Gin' made using ants, Cambridge, Britain - May 2015
Distiller Will Lowe thinks he's come up with a recipe for success - with this gin made from ants. Will uses thousands of red wood ants collected from forests in Kent to flavour the one-of-a-kind concoction, which he makes at his home-made distillery in Cambridge. He chose the unusual ingredients after discovering that when formic acid found in the abdomens of the ants mixes with alcohol it produces aromatic flavours similar to citrus. The resulting gin, called Anty Gin, is the first in the world to be made using insects - and each 70cl bottle contains the 'essence' of 62 ants. The bizarre tipple has just hit British shelves, but if buyers want to get their hands on a bottle they will have to fork out a whopping Ј200.
