Some of the Apatani women with their facial tattoo and nose plugs with photographer Cezary Wyszynski
Apatani tribal women, Arunachal Pradesh, India - Apr 2015
*Full story: http://www.rexfeatures.com/nanolink/qoi2
A photographer was given unique access to incredible tribal women who each have the same facial tattoo and nose plugs. Cezary Wyszynski, 38, stayed with the Apatani people in India whose women all went through the dramatic face-changing ritual when they had their first period. A guide took Cezary through their villages in the Ziro Valley in Arunachal Pradesh, India, where the last known 'plugging and tattooing' happened in 1972. The ancient tradition no longer takes place but women aged over 50 still display their remarkable wooden nose plugs - while others have removed them and had plastic surgery afterwards. The reason the younger women do not have the same distinctive features is because when they mixed with people from other cultures people declined to mix because they looked so unusual.
